Glossary of Insurance Terms

Accessories
Accessories are items that can be purchased and then permanently fitted to standard specification motorcycles to enhance the look of the vehicle, improve the safety aspect, or to provide additional capability, for example for luggage carrying. Accessories are usually applied in addition to the existing parts - but when they replace a standard part of the bike, the new part cannot modify the handling and/or performance characteristics from the standard specification.
They can be manufactured/sourced from either by the same company that made the original bike or by other companies (after market).
Accessories must not improve/alter the performance/handling of the vehicle but they can increase the value.
Please check your policy documentation for additional exclusions (i.e. Audio/Visual, Satellite Navigation equipment etc.).

Comprehensive Cover
Covers accidental damage, fire, theft and malicious damage, whether your fault or not. This includes damage to your vehicle when it is unattended, such as in the case of a hit and run or vandalism. This also covers your legal liability to third parties. Make sure to check your policy document for any exclusions or conditions.

Endorsement
This is a change in the terms of the insurance. Any applicable endorsements will show on your policy schedule.

Excess
A contribution by you towards a claim under your insurance policy. This may be recoverable from the third party if the incident was not your fault. There are two types of excess, mandatory and voluntary. Mandatory excesses are imposed by the insurer, whereas voluntary excess is an additional amount you agree to pay towards any claim, which may reduce your premium.

Fault claim
Any incident for which the rider's insurer was unable to make a full recovery for its outlay. Insurers will allocate as fault by prejudicing the rider's No Claims Bonus - regardless of level or protection in place. Even when No Claims Bonus is protected, it can be prejudiced as subsequent claims can reduce the No Claims Bonus level. For riders with Zero No Claims Bonus, a fault claim in the term will affect the level they receive in the subsequent year.

Insurance Premium Tax
This is a tax payable on all insurance policies, and is currently set at 5%. Our premiums include IPT within the rate quoted.

Modifications
Modifications are alterations to the basic structure of the motorcycle. This can involve changing the way the vehicle looks, its performance or both. Modifications will usually alter the value of the motorcycle. Due to the individual nature of the risk involved with modified vehicles, BikeTeam cannot provide quotes for modified vehicles online. Please call one of our Bike Specialists on 0800 917 5429 who will be happy to help you find the most suitable cover option.

No Claims Bonus
All of our insurers give a No Claims Bonus for each full year of claim free riding. The amount of discount given varies from insurer to insurer. We can only accept No Claims Bonus that has been used on a valid motorcycle policy within the last two years.

Protected No Claims Bonus
Some insurers will ‘protect’ your No Claims Bonus for an additional fee. Not all insurers offerings are the same, but generally this means that the first fault claim in any insurance year will not reduce your No Claims Bonus. Please check with your insurer for full details.

Third Party Fire & Theft Cover
Covers your legal liability to third parties, as well as cover for any fire damage to your vehicle, or loss or damage as a result of theft or attempted theft. There is no cover for accidental damage to your vehicle.

Third Party Only Cover
Covers you legal liability to third parties, there is no cover for loss or damage to your vehicle.
