Q1 What different cover options can you offer me?

We offer three levels of cover on our policies; Comprehensive, Third Party, Fire and Theft and Third Party only. For full detail of each insurer’s coverage options please refer to your policy document.

  • Comprehensive
Comprehensive Cover in the event of loss or damage to your vehicle. When you make a claim under your policy your insurer will pay for the repair of any damage sustained or provide a valuation for your vehicle if it has been written-off, subjected to fire damage or stolen. In addition, your policy will offer cover if a claim is made by someone else against you for death, physical injury or any property damage. Other terms and conditions will apply.
  • Third Party Fire and Theft
Third Party, Fire and Theft- Cover in the event of your vehicle being stolen or damaged by fire. In addition, your policy will offer cover if a claim is made by someone else against you for death, physical injury or any property damage. Other terms and conditions will apply.
  • Third Party Only
Third Party Only- Cover in the event of a claim being by someone else against you for death, physical injury or any damage to their property. Your policy will not cover you if your vehicle is stolen or damage in an accident where you are considered to have been at fault. Other terms and conditions will apply.

Q3 What is a compulsory excess?

This is the mandatory amount determined by an insurer for any claim being made under an insurance policy. This amount can vary depending on, for example the type of vehicle you’re looking to insure, your age or garaging arrangements.

Q4 What is a voluntary excess?

In some instances an insurer will provide additional discounts to your premium if you choose to accept an increased excess, in addition to the compulsory excess on a policy.

Q5  What is Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)?

Compulsory basic training (CBT) was introduced in 1990 to help reduce the very high accident rate among inexperienced motorcyclists. CBT must be completed before a learner moped or motorcycle rider is allowed to ride on the road with L-plates or D-plates in Wales.

You will need to complete a CBT if:

  • you want to ride a moped (a moped has an engine not over 50 cc with maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour which is approximately 31 miles per hour)
  • you want to ride a motorcycle

If you obtained your car licence before 1 February 2001 you do not need to complete a CBT to ride a moped.

Q6  What types of Full motorcycle licence are there?

There are two types of full motorcycle licence:

  • A light motorcycle licence (A1), which restricts riders to any bike up to 125 cc and a power output of 11 kW. The practical test must be taken on a bike of between 75 cc and 125 cc
  • A standard motorcycle licence (A), is obtained if the practical test is taken on a bike of over 120 cc but not more than 125 cc and capable of at least 100 km/h per hour. After passing the standard motorcycle practical test, you will be restricted for two years to riding a bike of up to 25 kW and a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kW/kg. After this you may ride any size of bike

We recommend that you contact the DVLA if you have any questions about your licence or any entitlement to ride a particular motorcycle.

Q7 Am I insured to ride my mate’s bike?

Subject to rules relating to your age and the cc of bike that you have insured with us certain insurers will allow you to ride a bike that you don’t own on a Third Party Only basis. However, we recommend that you check your policy documentation before relying on this cover. As ever, if you’d like clarification on any aspect of your policy please call us and speak to one of our Bike Specialists, who will be happy to assist with your query.

Q8 Can I add another rider to my policy?

Yes you can. Of course any possible additional premium that you’d need to pay would depend on the individual details of the rider that you’d be looking to add to your policy.

Q9 I own a number of bikes. Can I insure them on one policy?

Not only is this possible, but we have specially discounted rates for people who are looking for a multibike policy. We approach things on the basis that you’ll only be riding one bike at a time so you deserve a lower rate. Due to the indiviudal nature of multi-bike policies we'd like to speak to you directly to provide a policy tailored to your needs. Please call one of our Bike Specialists on 0800 917 5429.

Q10 How can I help to reduce my premium?

While there are some things you can’t change, like your bike’s garaging arrangements there are ways to help reduce the premium you pay for your bike insurance. While it not only reduces the risk of theft, insurers do provide extra discounts for any additional security that you fit to your bike.

Another way of gaining a discount is undertaking some form of further motorcycle training. At Bike Team we provide varying premium discounts for someone who undertakes a Bikesafe assessed ride all the way up to those with a RoSPA diploma.

Not only do we work with some of the biggest name insurers in the motorcycle market but given our knowledge and experience we also have access to special schemes that other companies may not have. Rest assured, whenever you go online or speak to one of our Bike Specialists you’ll be getting one of the best quotes around.

Q12 I have an advanced motorcycle training qualification. Does that help reduce my quote?

Q16 How can I pay for my motorcycle insurance?

You can pay for your policy either in full by credit or debit card or via Direct Debit. To use our credit facility you must be resident in the UK, aged 18 years or over and hold a bank or building society which supports Direct Debit. Credit is subject to status.

If you apply to pay via Direct Debit, we will pass your details to our third party instalment finance provider, Premium Credit Limited (PCL). We do not work with any other instalment providers on this product. Premium Credit will use your details to assess your application for credit and administer your credit agreement. In assessing your application they will search the public information that a credit reference agency holds about you. The credit reference agency will add details of the search and your application to their record about you whether or not your application proceeds. This and other information about you may be used to make credit decisions about you and undertake checks for the prevention and detection of money laundering.

If your application is accepted they will send you a welcome pack detailing their full terms and conditions, including full details of your right to withdraw from the credit agreement in the first 14 days if you are not happy with the terms. If your credit application is not accepted you will be notified by PCL in writing. We will also contact you to advise you of your options. In some cases we will be able to take payment in full, however your insurer may cancel your policy if credit has been rejected.

If you have any questions about your instalments you should contact Premium Credit on 0844 736 9836. If you do not pay your instalments PCL will tell us. On renewal of your policy we will continue to pass your details to PCL unless you instruct us otherwise.
